Though the origin of the name is not completely certain, most believe it was a Chippewa Indian word meaning ;assage or waterway between the lakes.

First to explore the area were the French, Nicolett in 1635 and Marquette and Joliet in 1643. It wasn't until a number of years later around 1699, that Father St. Cosme came to work with the Pottawatomie Indians there. A trading post was established in 1818 by a William Farnsworth. Others came built a saw mill and other homes and businesses. Finally, a post office was opened in 1836. Sheboygan became part of Sheboygan County in 1836 when the new county was created from Brown County on 7 December. Incorporation as a village took place on 9 February 1846. The city was first chartered in 1853.
