Mathis was born when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway came through in 1887. Thomas H. Mathis was the planner and chose the town site, also donating 300 acres for the new community. He also provided land for a school and any church that wanted to build a building. Mathis, along with his brother, helped to begin the Coleman, Mathis, Fulton Cattle Company in 1879. Later it became the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company. Mathis also became a large landowner in the area. To keep cattle out of the new community, he built a fence with gates at each end of town. The gates remained as late as 1906. Mathis was incorporated in 1939.
Lake Mathis was created during the 1930s about four miles from town. It is now known as Lake Corpus Christi. The Wesley Seale Dam helped to raise the water level to 94 feet above sea level in 1959. The new dam made Lake Corpus Christi one of the largest artificial bodies of water in Texas. This change brought more development and recreation to the area. Tourism remains a major factor in the area economy.
