As the story is told, Honey Grove was named by Davy Crockett in 1836. On his way to San Antonio, he camped in a grove of trees on the bank of Honey Grove Creek. In a letter he wrote home, he told of the ideal spot he camped, the "honey grove." The hollow trees of the grove had much honey in them.
The first settler, Samuel Erwin, came in 1842. Coincidentally, he was a friend of Davy Crockett.
Honey Grove prospered until around 1900 when the "boll weevil" appeared and ruined the cotton in the area. From that time, the population began to decrease

St. Mark's Episcopal Church

Honey Grove, TX 75446
the oldest church building in Honey Grove and also one of the oldest in North Texas. Restored in 1963, the church is not used for regular church services, but weddings and special events may be scheduled for the building.
