History & History Related Items
El Paso is the oldest settlement in Texas. The Mision Nuestra Senora del Carmen was founded in 1682. The mission was built by Tigua Indians, Spanish refugees and Franciscan padres well before the famous California Mission Chain was established. The El Camino Real or Royal Highway nearby was used by Spanish settlers to the area. Two other missions are located on the road - La Purisima Socorro, built in the 1680's by the Piro Indians (part of the Pueblo Nation) and San Elizario Mission. San Elizario was actually meant to be a presidio in the beginning.
El Paso is a Sister city to the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez. There is big tourism trade here and much agriculture with cotton, fruit and livestock. There is a large Mexican population in El Paso. The University of Texas is here, as well as Fort Bliss army base (a center for guided missile research)
The first American citizen known to have come to the El Paso area is Zebulon Pike in 1807. He did not come voluntarily, but as a captive of the Spanish. The old El Paso "Boot Hill" Cemetery is now known as Concordia Cemetery.
