Here is a history page for Brookings.
Brookings history goes back as far as 1500 BC. The waters of the Big Sioux River brought many wandering peoples to this area throughout time. Lakes, such as Oakwood Lakes and Lake Campbell, were also a drawing card. The plentiful water also brought abundant wildlife to the area, which, in turn, helped support the people who also arrived.
The city and the county were both named for Wilmot W. Brookings, one of the first settlers in the Dakota Territory. He came in June of 1857. He settled in Sioux Falls on 27 August 1857. Later, he toward the Yankton area to check an area which was to be ceded by the Native Americans there. Beginning the trip in January of 1858, they were soon set upon by a heavy blizzard, the result of which was the amputation of both of Brookings feet. Not to be deterred, Brookings continued settle the area, eventually becoming a leader in a number of government entities. He was highly respected by the people of the area. He came to the Brookings area as superintendent of a road from the Minnesota border west to the Missouri River near Ft. Pierre. The town and county were named for him in his honor and out of respect for all he did in the settlement of this area.
