This area was a prominent city as far back as 1570 when the Onondagas Indian chief, Hiawatha, chose it as the location of the capital of the Iroquois Confederacy. Fort Ste. Marie de Gannentaha was built by the Jesuits here in 1656, but it was abandoned after only two years due to the local Indian hostility. Salt helped to make the area what it is bringing both the Indian and the Anglo-American settlers here. The city was founded in 1805 and became the major supplier of salt for the entire country. The nickname, The Salt City, came because of the many salt mines in the area at this time.
Syracuse University was established in 1870 and is on a 640 acre campus, bringing students and visitors alike.
