Weather
changeable! It is usually warm in summer and cold in winter. But Lake Michigan has an effect on the weather. The lowest temperatures come when air flows southward to Lake Superior before blowing into the Gary area. The higher temperatures occur in the summer when the air flow is from the south or southwest.

Gary is part of the Calumet District, which was once one of the nation's greatest steel-producing areas. In 1906, it was the site of the main plant of the U.S. Steel Corporation.
Gary has been known as the Steel City, also City of the Century. It was incorporated in 1905 as the new home of United States Steel, taking its name from chairman, Elbert H. Gary, just like in the song from "The Music Man."

1922, MayJoseph Louis Kertesz
My grandfather was Joseph Louis KERTESZ. He was one of the original members of the Gary Police Force, c 1908. He rose to the rank of detective sergarent in January 1911. He retired from the force in January 1922 due to health reasons and died in May 1922 from TB.
He married Elizabeth 'Rose' ASZMONGYA. They had nine children: Joseph, Gustav, Elizabeth, Eugene, Ben, Madeline (Lena); Louis, William Joseph, and John.
Joseph kept the family name of Kertesz; however, others in the family took the name of Curtis, Curtiss, or Kertis.
