Community news
Two Swedish immigrants came here in the early 1870s to farm in the good soil and good weather. A very small settlement had grown around the railroad town called Kings River Switch. By 1874, a new town site map was drawn up and the name was changed to Kingsbury. Soon if became Kingsburgh and then, finally in 1894, it became Kingsburg. Wheat was the prevalent crop early on but when irrigation was introduced on a large scale, things began to change. Many of the migrant workers moved in with no connection to the town and as was common in the day, the town began to feel strained by the revelry produced on payday. The permanent residents wanted to protect their town and felt that incorporation might be helpful. Kingsburg was incorporated on 11 May 1908 and almost all the saloons were quickly closed. By the 1920s, most of the population of Kingsburg was of Swedish descent giving rise to the nickname that stands today, The Swedish Village or Little Sweden. There is Swedish architecture and atmosphere in Kingburg with Swedish banners flying and brightly painted Dala horses.
The students of California State University at Fresno added to Kingburg when they built the world’s largest box of raisins. Until 2002, most of the farmland was for grape and raisin growing but a big surplus of the crops occurred, forcing farmers to stop producing these fruits and to change to stone crops or in some cases, to sell out to developers for new housing in the growing town.
