Banning served as a stagecoach and railroad stop between the Arizona Territories and Los Angeles. It is also an agricultural area with ranching and orchards.
Banning is named for General Phineas T. Banning. He was a freighter who moved goods between Salt Lake City and San Bernardino and Los Angeles along the Mormon Trail. He also had a shipping company that went between San Pedro and Los Angeles as well as a stage line that moved between Wilmington and Yuma Arizona.

The Cherry Festival in the Pass
Since 1918
The festival features a parade, pancake breakfast, rides, live entertainment and much more. The Cherry Harvest doesn't always come during the festival as it varies from year to year. The season lasts for about a month.

COUNTY GOVERNMENT
Banning is located in the Fifth Supervisorial District. Within its jurisdiction are the cities of Moreno Valley, Perris, Calimesa, Beaumont, Banning, Desert Hot Springs and northern Palm Springs. Also included are the unincorporated areas of Nuevo, Lakeview, Juniper Flats, Meadowbrook, Good Hope, a portion of Mead Valley, Romoland, Homeland, Green Acres, Highgrove, Box Springs, Pigeon Pass, Reche Canyon, San Timoteo Canyon, Oak Valley, Cherry Valley, Banning Bench, Cabazon, Palm Springs Village and Palm Springs West. The District also includes the Tribal Governments from the Sovereign Nations of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians as well as a portion of March Air Reserve Base.
