"Cherokee Village began in 1954 when it was developed by Cooper Communities, Inc. It has continued to grow through the years. In January of 1997 there was interest in the community to incorporate. Because the Village boundaries lie within two different counties, Sharp and Fulton, petitions had to be filed in both counties to incorporate. Fulton County approved the petition while Sharp County denied it. The part of the village within Fulton County incorporated as Cherokee Village West in January of 1998.
Soon, thereafter, the new city council proposed the annexation of the Sharp County portion of the Village, which proposal was approved by the voters making a unified Village once again. It has become the largest city in the local area of Sharp, Fulton and Izard Counties." (from www.cherokeevillage.org/)
